Summary
Gus leaves Psych for a pharmaceutical company where he advances quickly thanks to the executive death rate. Jules is hung up on a suicide case she just can't let go. And Shawn gets obsessively involved in a violent video game in order to track down the missing game designer.
Review
As you may have guessed, I did a Psych "blitz" and read through a bunch of the books that I had sitting on my shelf for awhile. This was the best of the batch. It builds on some things from the last book. I absolutely loved the premise - what are Gus and Shawn when they don't have each other any more? Lots of crimes to keep track of, but well managed by the author so they don't get annoying or hard to follow.

FRIDAY: A Fatal Frame of Mind by William Rabkin
Summary
Gus receives a letter from a former professor, asking for his help. So Gus kidnaps Shawn, taking him to an art museum rather than the C. Thomas Howell Festival. Once at the museum, the guys find out there's been a murder, and Gus' professor is the primary suspect. The professor knows he's been framed, so he takes Lassie hostage to make his escape. Gus and Shawn get caught up in the conspiracy theory and try to clear his name.
Review
More twists and turns than usual in this story and the professor is a real pain sometimes. But the pop-culture references (Harry Potter, Transformers, Scooby Doo, Monty Python, and League of Their Own) and a great scene with Henry and Lassie, as well as the usual Shawn and Gus banter make it worth reading.

FRIDAY: Mind over Magic by William Rabkin
Summary
What do Screaming Yellow Zonkers, Ghostbusters, Monk, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter have in common? They are all references in this clever Psych mystery. Shawn and Gus return to the Fortress of Magic (after a trip in their youth) to do a favor for Henry and end up as witnesses to a magic trick gone wrong.
P'tol P'kah - the "Martian Magician" does an illusion where he dissolves in a tank of water and reappears in the audience. Pretty amazing - until he disappears and there's a body in the tank.
Review
Plenty of twists, turns and illusions in this magic-related story. The many ways Shawn tweaks the magician's name (P'can P'kie, P'teter P'karker, P'erry P'Mason, P'stuffed P'imento, P'torky P'kig) lead to giggles throughout the story - I can just hear James Roday doing those names! The story of why Henry sends the guys there in the first place is fun, too.

FRIDAY: Call of the Mild by William Rabkin
Summary
Shawn and Gus are on the case again. This time, the case takes them on a wilderness retreat with a group of hostile lawyers - and a killer.
Review
Good mystery - like Ten Little Indians and others where the killer takes the group out one at a time. Story is heavily in Gus' point of view which is fun because the whole wilderness setting tweaks with Gus' idiosyncrasies. The usual sarcasm and flippancy of the TV characters come across in the writing. Fun references to Lost, Star Trek and other bits of popular TV/movie culture. Good side story with Lassiter, O'Hara and Henry.

Waiting on WEDNESDAY: May New Releases (part 3)
These two releases mark the highlight of May for me. I have read that USA Network is going go hold Psych's new season until the fall, rather than start it in the summer as usual. I was so disappointed when I heard that. I look forward to spending my summer with Shawn and Gus. Guess I will be spending my summer with them on DVD instead.
This spring I discovered Jon Acuff and I have been waiting for Quitter to be released. In fact, when Lent ended and I could finally buy books again, this was the only one I really wanted, and it wasn't even out yet.
Looking forward to enjoying both of these items this month!

Waiting on WEDNESDAY: February Releases - Part 2
A children's book and a mystery - and from two of my favorite series. I just love Piggie and Gerald books from Mo Willems. And Shawn and Gus of Psych are my favorite detectives!
Happy February to me!

Waiting on WEDNESDAY
Psych is one of my favorite shows on television. I think Shawn and Gus are hilarious together. I love the sarcasm, the banter, and music. I read the first book and enjoyed it. These two are sitting on my shelf waiting for some attention.
I think the author has done a good job capturing the "voice" of the characters from the show. If you love Psych on TV, check out the book series and let me know what you think.

FRIDAY: A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Read
Psych is one of my favorite TV shows. I own the DVDs and watch episodes over and over when I am looking for a good laugh. When I saw there was a book from the series, I snatched it off the shelf and trotted immediately to the check out. I was a little nervous, though, that it wouldn't live up to expectations; I haven't read books from favorite TV series before. I wondered if the author could pull off the relationships and banter I love from the show.
In the story, Shawn and Gus just wrap up a case when they find themselves being shot at and running for their lives. They are "rescued" by a woman who says Shawn is sending her psychic messages. Three different story lines take off from there and eventually converge in the climax of the story.
I enjoyed the book. I think the author captured the relationships and the banter that I love so much. I did have to take breaks from reading because the story was somewhat convoluted and my brain needed a rest from trying to figure out what was going on (I don't read mysteries without trying to beat the sleuths to the solution). I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the show, and I would buy another in the series from this author.
The next book in the series will be Mind over Magic and is due out July 7, 2009.
