CHAPTER BOOK: The Friendship Matchmater by Randa Abdel-Fattah

The Friendship Matchmaker

Lara has declared herself the Friendship Matchmaker for her school She orients new students to the dos and don'ts of life at their school, mediates friendship issues, and finds loner kids a "BFF." When Emily comes to their school and flaunts all of Lara's rules, they decide a contest is in order - who can make the best BFF match for a long-term "total loner."

I loved how the author doled out Lara's story bit by bit as she told this story. Lara is a fascinating character - so sure she is a friendship expert, so sure that she is fulfilling her calling at her school, so sure she doesn't need a BFF of her own because she is working so hard to help others. But Emily completely ROCKS her world. Everyone seems to hold Lara - and her advice - in such high regard, Lara doesn't know what to do with someone who isn't bending over backwards to do whatever she says. The evolution of Lara in this story was very satisfying. I think the girls at my school will enjoy this story, especially those in fourth grade and older.
