Summary
The Delta Anomaly: The crew from the 2009 Star Trek movie appear in this novel for teens and older readers. The story takes place during their days at the academy. Kirk and McCoy are friends, and Spock and Uhura have chemistry. In this volume an old serial killer, The Doctor, returns to San Fransisco. Uhura's roommate is among those attacked, drawing our favorite cadets (and their pointy-eared commander) into the investigation. Readers familiar with the Star Trek Universe will start to recognize what's going on a little sooner than the characters in the book.
The Edge: The life of a Starfleet Academy Cadet is hard - crazy hard! The workload pushes the limits of reasonable in order to weed out those who don't have what it takes. Some of those cadets are willing to do whatever it takes - even putting their lives at risk - to make the cut. When one such cadet dies, Starfleet starts asking questions about its cadets - and James T. Kirk starts asking questions about one of those closest to him.
Review
I thoroughly enjoyed both of these books. There are some laugh-out-loud moments and good banter between the characters. I stayed up well past my bed time to finish each of these. For me, Rudy Josephs did the better job of capturing the "voices" of the characters in the movie. I read The Edge first and felt like the characters lost a little something when I went back to the first book. Within the overarching story in each book, readers can enjoy watching relationships and rivalries develop and read about cadet training - something the movies and TV shows didn't delve into too often. Looking forward to reading more in this series, especially if Josephs gets to write some more of them.
The Delta Anomaly: 4.5 out of 5 stars
The Edge: 5 out of 5 stars
Recommended for: readers over14, sci-fi fans, Star Trek fans, fans of the most recent Star Trek movie
Cautions: some language, flirty behavior, romantic relationships
