Summary
Yep, I'm a Trek fan!
This is the first book in a four book series (followed by Star Trek: Typhon Pact #2: Seize the Fire, Star Trek: Typhon Pact #3: Rough Beasts of Empire, and Star Trek: Typhon Pact #4: Paths of Disharmony) This particular story includes DS9 TV characters Julian Bashir and Ezri Dax as well as the Jack Pack (from the episode "Statistical Probabilities") and other characters from TV and books. Takes place after the Nemesis movie and the Destiny book series.
The Typhon Pact is the latest Federation foe, made up of the Breen, the Romulans, the Gorn and other species. They have stolen plans for the slipstream device from the Federation. If they can construct their own, the Federation will be at a great disadvantage.
Bashir and fellow genetically-enhanced human, Sarina Douglas, are pressed into undercover service with Starfleet Intelligence to infiltrate the Breen, find the device and plans, and destroy them. Captain Dax and the crew of the Aventine are to be their escape route - if they can keep out of the way of the Breen and Romulans themselves. As the first in a series of four, this is only the beginning of the trials and missions involving the Typhon Pact. Twist reveal at the very end will draw fans through the rest of the series to see what develops.
Review
I enjoyed this volume. I haven't read any Star Trek in awhile, so it took a little bit to get back into the lingo and the non-TV characters I have read about before. There were a couple fantastic, clever, laugh-out-loud moments involving the crew of the Aventine that I especially enjoyed. Interesting reveals about the little-known Breen. Twist at the end that hints at things to come. I do better with these books when I can read the series straight through. I already have book 2 ready to read next and have put in a request for book 3. Reading them straight through helps me keep track of the non-TV characters and species from book to book.
3.5 out of 5 stars
Recommended for: Star Trek fans.
Cautions: some language, adult situations, violence including interrogation and fighting scenes
