Book 3 (of 5) in the Heroes of Olympus series.
The seven demigods of prophecy - Annabeth, Percy, Piper, Jason, Hazel, Frank and Leo - are ready to kick off their quest to go to Rome and keep Gaea from rising and destroying the world. But, as with all quests, this will not go smoothly. Gaea is all about stirring up trouble, and some on the Roman side don't need much convincing to wage war on the Greeks. Then there's the prophecy about Annabeth and the Mark of Athena and a quest Annabeth must tackle alone. A friend is days from death. The gods are at war within themselves as their Roman and Greek natures wrestle for control. And personalities and history within the team threaten to divide them. How can they possibly succeed?
About a third of the way through, I got afraid that this would be one of those "filler" books - a book an author uses to stretch his tale and make more money. There were so many things going on and so many things going wrong. But those fears were quickly laid to rest as the pieces started to come together and the action amped up right to the end. I am already looking forward to House of Hades next fall. The dynamics between the kids on the team felt realistic. They are hesitant to trust one another with all their secrets. The romantic relationships compliment AND complicate the quest. This was a great, engrossing story that I am already looking forward to reading again!
