MONDAY: Dear Mrs. LaRue and Desperate Dog Writes Again

Summary
Ike the dog has been sent to obedience school, and he is miserable. He writes daily letters to his owner, Mrs. LaRue about how he has been wrongly placed there and how desperate he is to come home. Each page shows Ike's negative perception of his situation - in black-and-white - up against the colorful picture of reality.

Review

I picked this up to use in Writing Club with my students to talk about writing letters. (I'm using both books covered in this review as well as Stink and the Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker (Book #2)) The illustrations are fantastic, and Ike's situation makes for a great read-aloud.

Summary
Emma the dog is desperate! A woman named Loretta is trying to kidnap Emma's owner, George. She holds his hand all the time, and she has this dog named Hank who has stolen Emma's place on George's couch! Emma emails Ask Queenie, an advice column for dogs - but Queenie's advice just makes things worse. What can Emma do to get her life back?

Review

Stumbled across this at the library and it was perfect for my letter-writing lesson. Delightfully current with email instead of a snail-mail letter. The story is clever with great twists and misunderstandings. Kids will catch on much sooner than Emma and will enjoy watching her trying to make things right with George. Great pictures (especially at the end).
