PICTURE BOOK: Rocket Writes a Story by Tad Hills

A sequel to Rocket Learns to Read, and just as precious as the first!

Rocket and his teacher, the little yellow bird, are still working on reading. Rocket discovers new words every day and hangs them on a tree. One day he decides he is going to write a story with some of his new words. But writing a story is hard - Rocket has a hard time coming up with an idea. Once he has an idea, there are days when the writing goes well and days when it does not. Then Rocket makes a new friend when he shares his story with an owl who lives in the tree that inspired the story.

The illustrations are absolutely delightful. I just want to hug Rocket! This will be a great story to share with my writing club students. I may even share it with all of my students for the start of school this year.

Rocket is a treasure!

MONDAY: How Rocket Learned to Read

I'm not much of a dog person, but I would take Rocket home in a heart beat!

A little yellow bird decides that she will be Rocket's teacher and what better thing can she teach the playful little pup than reading?

But Rocket is pretty attached to his routine of play and sleep. In fact, when the bird begins to read a story, Rocket is annoyed that she is disturbing his nap. Soon, though, Rocket is drawn into the story and wants to know how it ends, so he has to learn to read.

Tad Hills is the author of our favorite Duck and Goose books. Rocket is a great addition to any bookshelf.

MONDAY: Duck and Goose

I am a huge fan of picture books, and these two are gems! In the first book, Duck and Goose discover an "egg" and each wants to protect it and teach its tiny occupant to be a duck or a goose. They fuss with each other about their differences until they discover that they have quite a bit in common.

In the second book, there is a new duck on the scene and she is a little... intense. And her intensity makes Goose feel so uncomfortable that he decides to leave. Can the friends learn to get along while not giving up who they are?

These stories are great fun to read out loud. I got them for my 4-year-old niece and she spent a week trying to hatch an egg of her own!
